Rescue dogs often come from challenging backgrounds, and even small acts of kindness can have significant impacts on their well-being. However, please only apply if you are serious and can commit to at least a few hours every month. We don't have the time or staff to conduct orientations for those who plan to volunteer just once. We hate to even mention this, but it has become an issue. If you are serious about helping homeless dogs, they NEED YOU: Here are some meaningful ways you can make a difference through rescue dog care:
**Dog Walking**
Taking a rescue dog for a walk once or twice a week helps them get the exercise they need while also providing them with the opportunity to explore the world around them. This simple act can greatly reduce their stress and improve their mental health. Unfortunately, we don't have much space at the rescue to walk dogs, so volunteers usually take dogs to the Greenway or to their favorite walking or hiking spot. There is a small grassy area on the side of the rescue where you could sit with a dog or go on a very short walk.
**Car Rides**
Many dogs enjoy car rides, which can be a delightful adventure for a rescue dog. It gives them a change of scenery and a chance to experience new smells and sounds, or even a pup cup or plain hamburger for the really lucky ones, making their day more exciting.
**Quality Time**
Spending quality time with a rescue dog in their kennel, whether it's brushing their fur or simply petting them, can create a deep bond. This interaction not only provides comfort but also helps them become more social and trusting.
**Other Ways to Help**
**Training Sessions**
Do you know how to teach a dog to sit? Engaging in dog training by teaching a rescue dog basic commands or fun tricks can improve their confidence and make them more adoptable.
**Playtime**
Playing with toys or engaging in fun activities can provide much-needed stimulation and enjoyment for a rescue dog. It can also be a great way to build a bond and watch their unique personality shine. Some of our more experienced volunteers even take their favorite pooch home for a fun day away from the rescue!
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Rusty's Legacy. Please review our specific requirements below:
Dog Walking Requirements
If you wish to walk dogs, you must be physically able to independently harness and leash them. You must also be capable of transporting dogs off-property for walks, hikes, or car rides on your own. Our staff is not available to assist you once you have completed your orientation.
On-Property Volunteering
If you prefer to stay on-property, you must be comfortable entering dog kennels independently following your orientation. Our small staff is dedicated to cleaning and caring for the animals and cannot provide ongoing assistance.
Our Expectations
Because we are a small rescue, we rely on confident self-starters. If you are not comfortable handling these tasks independently, we may not be the right fit for your volunteer goals. Our staff must remain focused on their primary duties to ensure the well-being of our dogs.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, or accompanied by a responsible adult while volunteering. Children under the age of 10 are not permitted to volunteer.
Thank you for your understanding and for supporting our mission.
You will need to attend an orientation session at the rescue before you begin volunteering.
